Over PLN 1.3 million for international educational projects

Students
The Faculty of Applied Physics and Mathematics and the Faculty of Management and Economics received funding for the implementation of international teaching projects. Thanks to this, Gdańsk University of Technology will host foreign students and doctoral students at several international summer schools in the next two years.

ScienceApp

Screencap is an educational project concerning intensive, international education programs in the field of applied sciences. Thanks to the received funding, the FAPh&M will launch several international summer schools in the next academic year, operating in the hybrid form, i.e. blended learning, or on-line (depending on the pandemic situation).

An interdisciplinary team composed of: PhD Agnieszka Bartłomiejczyk, PhD, DSc Maciej Bobrowski, PhD Małgorzata Franz and PhD, DSc Jan Franz, MSc. Adrian Myszkowski, PhD, Eng. Justyna Signerska-Rynkowska and PhD, Eng. Justyna Szostak, is working on the implementation of the Science App project on the part of the FAPh&M.

– The aim of the project is to encourage active and ambitious foreign students and doctoral students to undertake education in the field of applied sciences, i.e. physics, mathematics, materials engineering and nanotechnology as well as applied computer science - explains PhD Justyna Szostak, dean's plenipotentiary for the internationalization of the faculty, project leader - we would like them to join the group of lecturers and research workers of our faculty in the near future. This is not an easy task, requiring not only an interesting educational offer, but also a wide promotion campaign of our region and country.

The courses that summer school participants will be able to attend will have as many practical elements as possible related to research, which should contribute to increasing the ability of students and PhD students to tackle complex scientific issues.

In the next two academic years 2021/2022 and 2022/2023, in which the project will be implemented, 4 summer schools will be organizedat Gdańsk Tech. They will be conducted in English by foreign and Polish specialists from all research areas of the FAPH&M:

1. ENERGIQ (Thermo-electric technology based on solids and liquids) summer school in the field of physics and materials engineering, one edition

2. QUEUE (Quantum and Molecules) summer school in the field of physics and nanotechnology, 3 editions

3. TopDynSystAction (Topology and Dynamical Systems in Action) summer school in the field of mathematics, one edition

4. Monte @ GUT summer school (Monte Carlo methods for simulating the transport of charged particles) on the border of theoretical physics, materials science, mathematics and computer science, 3 editions.

They will be addressed mainly to 2nd and 3rd cycle students. Each of the summer schools will be a separate subject, with a specific number of ECTS points and a compulsory part integrated with a given subject, promoting the culture and history of Poland, especially the region. - In the longer term, we plan to include some of the subjects realized in summer schools permanently in the English-language teaching offer of our Faculty as part of the second and third cycle of studies - adds PhD Justyna Szostak. - We are also considering the possibility of introducing these courses on platforms dedicated to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), in order to broadly promote the Faculty and the university in the international environment.

The experience and opinions of students and lecturers on mixed and distance learning gathered during the implementation of the Project will be used to further develop modern educational technologies, favoring the internationalization of the Faculty and the entire university.

Innovators of the Future

The Faculty of Management and Economics also received funding under the Spinaker program. Thanks to this, eighty students of foreign universities will take part in the project entitled Innovators of the Future . The activities planned for implementation in the project meet the need to maintain the dynamics of development in the area of internationalization, including the expansion of the educational offer with a new Intensive International Education Program implemented using blended learning and increasing the number of foreign students, especially from Central and Eastern Europe and the countries of the former USSR.

Students invited to participate in the project will prepare to create and implement innovative solutions in the changing world of VUCA based on self-organizing virtual teams.

Four editions of the program are planned (May and September 2022 and May and June 2023), and each edition will be attended by 20 students from outside Poland.

– The implementation of the project will contribute to the enrichment and extension of the Gdańsk Tech’s didactic offer with a new, English-language program of classes conducted in the blended learning formula, carried out with the use of the latest didactic tools - explains Mariusz Krzyżanowski, project leader – It also fits perfectly into the internationalization process of Gdańsk University of Technology. Activities related to recruitment at foreign universities and the participation of foreign students in the classes will be of significant importance in terms of the promotion of Gdańsk Tech on the international educational market, enabling the establishment of new contacts, and may contribute to consolidating its image as a modern university offering attractive educational programs.

The project was developed by a team composed of: PhD Katarzyna Stankiewicz; PhD, DSc Magdalena Olczyk, professor at the university; PhD Michał Tomczak; PhD Barbara Geniusz - Stepnowska; PhD, Eng. Sebastian Wilczewski; Leszek Sobolewski; PhD, Eng. Karol Flisikowski, MSc. Mariusz Krzyżanowski - project leader.

Both projects will be implemented under the SPINAKER program - Intensive International Education Programs, organized by the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). The program is financed by the European Union under the Knowledge Education Development Operational Program (Action 3.3. Internationalization of Higher Education). The Screencap and Innovators of the Future projects worth PLN 726,900.00 and PLN 635,920.00 will be fully financed by NAWA, which granted funds for the international promotion of the Faculty of M&E also as part of the Welcome to Poland program.
