The international Galileo Award for an architect from GUT

Dr. Eng. Arch. Karolina Zielińska-Dąbkowska, assistant professor at the Department of Urban Architecture and Waterscapes, Faculty of Architecture GUT, was awarded the international Galileo Award 2020, by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) which is based in the USA.

The Galileo Award was established by the IDA Europe in 2003 and has traditionally been presented at the European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky. Only one award is awarded each year "in recognition of outstanding achievements in research or academic work on light pollution over a multiple-year period".

– I am extremely grateful to be among such outstanding scientists in this field, publishing their research in the most prestigious journals in the world. I am pleased that my applied research has been appreciated.– said the winner during the award ceremony.

In the Jury's opinion Asst. Prof. Dr. Karolina Zielińska-Dąbkowska “promotes and advances the mission of the IDA to preserve the night sky in her work by authoring and co-authoring research articles on the topic. Additionally, she provides outstanding education to the lighting community via professional and scientific conference presentations. She also works with policy-makers to combat light pollution through the lighting standards and guidelines she co-developed. Consequently, lighting practitioners implement these in their daily practice. In short, Karolina has had a profoundly positive impact on the lighting design community due to her consistent activity and sharing of research.”

Dr. Zielińska-Dąbkowska is the head of the interdisciplinary research group ILLUME as part of the EcoTech Center at the Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT), created to minimize the impact of artificial light pollution on people, flora and fauna. The members of the group have outstanding practical skills and research knowledge about these issues. Not only do they consistently identify important problems and research topics, they find practical solutions to reduce or solve existing problems. The group is also developing methodologies for measuring artificial light pollution using modern photogrammetric and remote sensing methods, based on, for example, the processing and analysis of data obtained with a drone equipped with photosensitive sensors.
