Scholarships for talented 1st year students of Gdańsk University of Technology

scholarships
Similarly to the previous years, students starting their studies at Gdańsk University of Technology have a chance to receive scholarships from the first year of their studies. The application must be submitted by Monday, 30 November 2020. First of all, creative successes as well as outstanding academic results will be taken into account. Priority will be given to the participants of the "Zdolni z Pomorza" (Talented for Pomerania) project.

These scholarships have been awarded continuously since 2013 from the Gdańsk University of Technology's own scholarship fund (GUT OSF). It was then that the authorities of our university - meeting the announcements of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education - created the possibility of awarding scholarships to outstanding first-year students for their achievements and outstanding academic results obtained at the previous educational stage.

– We should, especially now as the second best research university in Poland, appreciate the scientific commitment and successes achieved in high school by students starting their studies at Gdańsk University of Technology - says the director of the Mathematics Teaching and Distance Learning Centre, PhD Barbara Wikieł, prof. at GUT. – For many years, acting in the field of supporting gifted students, and at the same time participating in the work of the commission awarding scholarships from the GUT OSF, I have observed the great potential of these young people and how much they are involved in scientific activities at the school stage. They often carry out student research projects on their own or in teams, actively participate in youth conferences, and even work in research clubs at universities.

– Scholarships for outstanding first-year students are a great form of rewarding for above-average commitment and development of their talents. As a former scholarship holder and currently a student with academic successes, I confirm that it is also an effective motivator for further, hard work. This scholarship not only rewards the best first-year students, but above all shows them that the university appreciates their hard work and wants to support them in achieving further, even greater successes – says Szymon Krawczuk, winner of the scholarship competition from the Own Scholarship Fund in 2015, and awarded with the award for the best Student-Scientist in the ProJuvenes plebiscite and elected the ‘Student of the Year’ in 2019. Currently, he is the Deputy Chairman of the Student Government of Gdańsk University of Technology for Internationalization and Science.

However, it should be added that - in accordance with the regulations for awarding and paying out scholarships from the Gdańsk University of Technology's Own Scholarship Fund - scholarships for creative achievements and outstanding results in science may not be awarded to persons receiving scholarships from the state budget.

Since 2010, Gdańsk University of Technology, together with the Pomeranian Voivodeship Self-government, has been co-creating the regional system of supporting gifted students, which has become a permanent part of the educational policy of our region. Our university took part in the preparation and implementation of the project ‘The Pomerania Region - a good course for education. Supporting students with special predispositions in the field of mathematics, physics and computer science’ (in short – ‘The Talented of Pomerania’), carried out by the Marshal's Office of the Pomeranian Voivodeship in the entire voivodeship in 2010-2013.

Since 2016, Gdańsk University of Technology, in partnership with the Self-government of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, has been implementing another project ‘Talented of Pomerania - Gdańsk University of Technology’, planned for 2016-2021. PhD Barbara Wikieł is the research supervisor and at the same time the manager of this project (pg.edu.pl/zdolnizpomorza).
