Tuesday, 15 December, summed up the year of activities of the Academic Sports Association at the Academic Sports Gala 2020. Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, GUT rector, received a statuette for the historic victory in the general classification of the Polish Academic Championships, as well as a number of other awards and prizes on behalf of the GUT community.

The Academic Sports Gala takes place in autumn each year and is a summary of ASA’s activities during the academic year. Although the restrictions had a significant impact on academic sports, we managed to conduct the entire series of Polish Academic Championships, which is one of the most important tasks of ASA.

Gdańsk University of Technology achieved a spectacular success in it, winning the general classification of PAC - ahead of the University of Warsaw and the Silesian University of Technology. Our university was also the only one whose athletes took part in all 48 PAC disciplines, and what's more, it also won the classification of technical universities.

– We managed to perform in all disciplines, mainly thanks to the efforts of the employees of the Academic Sports Center of our university - said prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of GUT. – I would like to highlight the work of Andrzej Bussler, president of the ASA board, Kazimierz Rozwadowski, deputy director of ASC and director of the Center Krzysztof Kaszuba. I would also like to thank the students who, despite the pandemic, trained intensively, prepared themselves diligently for the competition and took part in all competitions of the championships.

Gdańsk University of Technology on the highest podium

The organizers of the gala indicated that conducting the entire championship cycle in 2020 was a big challenge. - It was a difficult and demanding year in which our entire organization had to prove successful. ASA, however, did a great job - assessed prof. Alojzy Nowak, president of the Academic Sports Association.

– It was not easy, because apart from the competitors themselves, who were ready to start, we had to convince state and university structures. Fortunately, it worked, because the strength of ASA is the structure, facilities and people – added the secretary general of the organization, Dariusz Piekut.

Gdańsk University of Technology was second to none in the classification of technical universities, while the University of Warsaw won the classification of universities. The best among medical universities was the Medical University of Łódź, among social and natural universities the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw, among the universities of physical education, the Kozminski University in Warsaw was the best among non-public universities, and the gold medal among higher vocational schools went to the students of the State Higher Vocational School in Tarnów.

World Championships and the Academic Sports Association

During the gala, Polish medalists of the World Academic Championships were also awarded (in 2020, however, only two events of this rank were held, and the Polish representatives received a total of six medals of the World Championships, all won by speed skaters). ASA APE Katowice, which in 2019 won the sports classification for children and youth was also awarded, and the Łódź University of Technology honoured its 75th anniversary of establishment in a special way.

The Academic Sports Association is the largest and oldest student organization in Poland, with nearly 40,000. members. ASA operates on the basis of approximately 250 clubs and 2.5 thousand sections. Its flagship event is the Academic Polish Championships, and in the field of sports promotion, among others also the First Year Student Games. ASA also means competitive sport and world stars who, training mainly in ASA APE clubs, represent Poland at the most important competitions.
