Another step "towards the sea". Gdańsk Tech focuses on offshore wind energy
Gdańsk University of Technology, as a leading scientific and research institution in the field of ocean engineering in Poland, meets market trends and focuses on even better and more effective expansion of the knowledge and competences of its students and scientists.
In addition to the cooperation agreement with the Danish University of Technology, the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences and PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, Gdańsk University of Technology intends to open an inter-university field of study in offshore wind energy together with a partner research and education center in this field - the Gdynia Maritime University.
The university also successfully conducts postgraduate studies in Offshore Wind Energy at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology. Currently, the third edition of the studies is underway, the participants of which provide human resources to the dynamically developing area of offshore wind energy.
Moreover, Gdańsk University of Technology will soon establish the Gdańsk Tech Marine Wind Energy Research Center, which will closely cooperate with the maritime industry, including by carrying out research and orders for external entities.
Broad cooperation framework thanks to the agreement
The memorandum signed on 18 May is the next step in the development of the university in the offshore area, which, due to the proximity of the sea and leading Baltic ports in Gdynia and Gdańsk, has a great tradition both in terms of educating the next generations of engineers and specialists, as well as in conducting scientific research and developing innovative marine technologies . The participation of the Danish side in the agreement results from the fact that Denmark is a leading country in Europe in terms of the use of wind energy and in scientific research in this field.
The cooperation agreement was signed in the Auditorium of Gdańsk University of Technology by: prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Peter Hauge Madsen, director of the Wind Energy department of the Danish Technical University, prof. Jan Kiciński, director of FFMI PAS, and Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of the management board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. The importance of the agreement was emphasized by the presence of the ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark in Poland, Ole Toft, and Julian Skelnik, consul of the Kingdom of Denmark in Gdańsk. The initiator of the agreement was prof. Wojciech Litwin, director of the Institute of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology.
– The conclusion of this agreement is a big step forward for all parties and the possibility of establishing even closer and more effective cooperation - emphasized prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of Gdańsk Tech. - By taking this next step "towards the sea", we meet market trends and expectations. We intend to face the challenge and work with all our strength for the dynamically developing offshore industry - added the Gdańsk Tech rector.
– Cooperation with leading Polish and foreign research centers is a chance for all of us for the dynamic development of renewable energy sources in Poland - said Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of the management board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. - The exchange of knowledge between us and our partners will also contribute to building the competences of the future among students who in the coming years will be able to find employment in prepared offshore projects in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea.
As part of the agreement, the parties undertook to:
- organize regular, mutual visits of professors, researchers and academics at both universities for research and teaching purposes,
- increase the mobility of students and doctoral students of both universities, as well as technical and administrative staff,
- transfer knowledge through training programs between the parties,
- cooperate in activities of particular importance in research and development or science, also through the exchange of experience in the use of complex scientific and technical equipment,
- organize promotional initiatives, such as: seminars, conferences, workshops, lessons, student internships, training sessions and study meetings,
- develop initiatives to improve management,
- develop joint projects that will be submitted for funding by the European Commission or other national or international organizations,
- organize activities aimed at transferring and disseminating the knowledge acquired under the agreement.
