Report on the activities of Gdańsk University of Technology for 2021

Main building
Two new interdisciplinary research and innovation centers and the commencement of operation by the Center for Modern Education, maintaining the position in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking and the podium in the Perspektywy ranking, as well as significant sports successes and a new building that extends the campus of Gdańsk University of Technology are just some of the successes of Gdańsk University of Technology last year. The senate of the university has just approved the "Report on the activities of Gdańsk University of Technology for 2021", which was presented at the senate meeting by prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, vice-rector for organization and development.

Science

In 2021, the scientific promotions received slightly decreased compared to 2020: the title of professor was obtained by 9 scientists (compared to 11 nominations in 2020), 12 - the degree of habilitated doctor (56 titles in 2020), while the number of defended doctoral dissertations increased - 58 doctoral degrees were awarded (49 in 2020)

Once again, scientists from Gdańsk University of Technology published more and more often than in previous years. There were 1,238 publications in prestigious journals from the JCR list (1168 in 2020) and 207 articles in other journals from the ministerial list (202 in 2020). In total, the number of all publications in 2021 was 1,894 and was higher than in the previous year by 89 items.

The Faculty of Chemistry - with a score of 2.4, remained the leader in the list of publications per one full-time job at the faculty. The top three most active faculties also include the Faculty of Management and Economics (1.9) and the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics (1.8).

Comparing the number of publications of scientists from Gdańsk Tech registered in the Scopus database, compared to other research universities in Poland, Gdańsk University of Technology ranks second, only after the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

The Faculty of Chemistry (over 4 million funding) turned out to be the most effective in obtaining funds from the IDUB program, followed by FMEST (over PLN 2.5 million) and FETI (PLN 2 126 thousand). In terms of effectiveness in obtaining funds, the Faculty of Architecture was once again unsurpassed, where 100% of the submitted applications received funding.

Taking into account all domestic sources of funding for research projects, the Faculty of Chemistry obtained the largest funds - almost PLN 23 million

Internationalization

In 2021, restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic were still in place worldwide. Nevertheless, 226 foreign students came to Gdańsk University of Technology - most of them from Spain, Turkey and France. Over 100 GUT students managed to go to study abroad, and the most willingly chosen countries were: Italy, Portugal and Spain. The students of the Faculty of Architecture as well as Management and Economics turned out to be among the most mobile ones.

Didactics

Although the total number of full-time and part-time students decreased in the 2021/2022 academic year (from 14,130 to 13,298), there was an increase in the interest in postgraduate studies (885 admitted vs 725 in the previous year). The number of implementation doctorates also increased - to 63 in 2021 (compared to 25 in 2020). The number of foreign doctoral students who come to Gdańsk Tech for at least two semesters or for a full course of study also increased. Over 70 percent of all students of Gdańsk University of Technology are full-time and part-time 1st cycle students. The level of satisfaction of Gdańsk Tech graduates with the selected university - 93%, the faculty - 86% and the field of study - 79% remains at a consistently high level.

When examining the careers of graduates, it can be seen that over 90 percent of graduates with a Gdańsk University of Technology diploma work professionally and this level does not fluctuate significantly (94% - 2019, 93% - in 2020 and again 94% in 2021)

Finances

Gdańsk University of Technology closed the year 2021 with a net profit of over PLN 16 million. It was about PLN 8 million lower than the profit in 2020.The largest investment expenditure in 2020 was the purchase of a teaching and research building at Sobieskiego 18 Street (the purchase price is PLN 24 million) and thermal modernization and demolition of balconies in the building of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology (the cost of the renovation was PLN 7.3 million).

Initiatives and achievements

Gdańsk University of Technology was included in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, for the second time and maintained its position in the range of 801-900.

For the second time, the university took third place among the best technical universities, and also maintained the sixth position in the classification of all universities in the country in this year's ranking of universities by the "Perspektywy" Foundation. On the other hand, in the Ranking of Study Fields, environmental engineering conducted at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering was recognized as the best in Poland.

There were also sports successes. Gdańsk Tech won for the second time in a row in the general classification of the Polish Academic Championships in 2021.
