On 5 December Gdańsk University of Technology housed the 14th meeting of the Maritime Convention - an advisory body established in 2016 by the Minister of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Grzegorz Witkowski and the Pomeranian Voivode Dariusz Drelich.

The main theme of the convention was Polish maritime security and increasing the defense capabilities of the Navy.

– I am glad that I can once again host the Maritime Convention at Gdańsk University of Technology and once again emphasize our commitment to continuing the broadly understood maritime policy. The Polish sea is not only a matter of economic development, but also of the sovereignty of the Republic of Poland, which may be the stronger the more the Polish maritime and shipbuilding industry develops, strengthens and strives for innovation, said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, opening the Convention. – The maritime industry needs a wide variety of competences, professional advice, as well as support from science and new technologies so that further new industrial and infrastructural investments can be implemented. It was for this purpose that the Maritime Convention was established, which meets these needs very well.

After the Prime Minister's speech, the Allegory of Science statuette was given to Captain Zbigniew Sulatycki, chairman of the Maritime Convention. The allegory was presented by Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech.

– Captain, science is making its way towards the sea, also thanks to you, which is why I am pleased to present you this statuette - emphasized the Rector.

Then, Capt. Zbigniew Sulatycki took the floor.

– Maritime economy must be one of the main pillars of the national economy. Many investments have already been made, and I am particularly proud that we are now building Kormorany (Cormorant) warships in the Polish shipyard - Polish ships for the Polish army. What previously seemed impossible is now being implemented, he noted.

In the next part of the meeting, expert presentations were held. Vice Admiral Krzysztof Jaworski, Commander of the Maritime Operations Center - Commander of the Maritime Component, presented the new capabilities of the Navy in the dynamically changing national security environment; Vice Admiral Jarosław Ziemiański talked about the capabilities of the Navy in the field of securing critical infrastructure.

Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech, presented the educational and scientific activities of Gdańsk University of Technology for the development of the maritime economy, as well as the existing cooperation and possibilities of Gdańsk Tech in the field of services and supplies for the Navy. In the last lecture, Adm. prof. Tomasz Szubrycht, commandant rector of the Naval Academy, discussed the concept of using innovative technologies to support the activities of the Navy.

In the next part of the Convention the voivode, Dariusz Drelich read a letter by the Marshal of the Sejm, Elżbieta Witek, addressed to the participants of the convention. "I hope that participation in the fourteenth Convention devoted to exceptionally important and topical issues will be a source of further inspiring ideas for you. I am convinced that they will turn out to be extremely valuable, especially in the face of the challenges related to the current geopolitical situation and the need to ensure Poland's security also from the Baltic Sea (…)” wrote the Marshal of the Sejm.

In turn, the letter of PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński was read out by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Grzegorz Witkowski.

The official part of the meeting ended with the award ceremony. Medals of the Centenary of Regaining Independence were awarded by the Pomeranian Voivode to Marcin Iwankiewicz, Deputy Director for Health Care of the SP ZOZ Health Resort of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration in Sopot, and Małgorzata Winiarek-Gajewska, President of the Management Board of the NDI Group.
