Prof. Marian Cichy, rector of Gdańsk University of Technology in 1978-1981 is dead
Prof. Marian Cichy was born on 9 January 1931 in Warsaw. He completed his higher education in 1955 at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Gdańsk University of Technology, obtaining a master's degree in mechanical engineering. In the same year he started working at the university. He obtained his doctorate seven years later, in 1962, for his thesis "Vacuum regulation of the mixture composition in engines with gasoline injection”. In 1970 he obtained his habilitation at the Faculty of Working Machines and Vehicles of the Warsaw University of Technology. He received the title of associate professor in 1977, and the title of full professor in 1991.
In the years 1969-1972 he was the deputy head of the Institute of Thermal Technology of Gdańsk Tech. In 1972, he became vice-rector for general affairs. He held this position until 1975, when he was appointed vice-rector for another three-year term, this time for development. In 1978, he was elected rector of Gdańsk University of Technology. He held this position until 1981.
Later, in the years 1992-1997, he was the head of the Department of Combustion Engines and Compressors at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He retired in 1999. In 2015, he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor Emeritus of Gdańsk University of Technology.
Prof. Marian Cichy was the author and co-author of 177 publications, including 2 independent books and a script, on combustion engines and modeling of energy systems using the bond graph method and methods of computer modeling of physical systems, vehicles and working machines with combustion engines. The most important scientific achievement of prof. Cichy is the development and introduction, for the first time in the country, of a modeling method using bond graphs.
Prof. Marian Cichy supervised 16 doctors, two of whom obtained habilitation degrees. As an academic teacher, he supervised over 120 diploma theses. Students remember him as an extremely kind person who devoted a lot of his attention to them. His lectures on combustion engines were an energizing spectacle full of surprising twists and inspiring conclusions. The most difficult exam question asked by prof. Cichy was: "What would you like to talk about?"
He was a member of numerous scientific bodies, including the Automotive Scientific Society, the Ecological Vehicles Society and the Gdańsk Scientific Society. He was eagerly invited as a visiting professor to foreign universities, including Rome, Turin or Naples.
He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gold Medal for Merits to Gdańsk University of Technology, the "Rebellious at Gdańsk University of Technology 1945 - 1989" Medal and many state and departmental decorations.
