Scientists from Gdańsk University of Technology will contribute to the development of the Internet of Things technology, artificial intelligence and 5G networks

At the beginning of June, two large projects with the participation of scientists from Gdańsk University of Technology were launched, implemented under the Horizon 2020 program. Thanks to the established cooperation, the university will have a real impact on the development of the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G networks. It will also provide innovative solutions for companies such as Airbus, Ericsson, Ford and Philips.

GUT's participation in an international group of partners and the possibility of a real impact on the development of Internet of Things technology (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and new reconfigurable antennas for future 5G systems is a great success. It is also the culmination of many years of efforts of a group of scientists working at the GUT Department of Microwave and Antenna Engineering of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics and the effect of their scientific research and research and development works.

GUT will provide solutions in these projects, including those for Airbus, Ericsson, Ford, Philips Healthcare, AVL, NXP or Liebherr. The total GUT budget in both of these projects is PLN 11.8 million.

EUR 44 million to fight cyber attacks

The InSecTT project - Intelligent Secure Trustable Things is an initiative with a budget of over 44 million euro, which includes the most important companies and research institutions from all over Europe (a total of 52 partners from 11 EU countries and Turkey), developing secure IoT systems supported by artificial intelligence solutions. The use of intelligent data processing mechanisms in IoT devices will allow to create solutions more resistant to cyber-attacks and interferences that can be used in the areas of Industry 4.0.

GUT plays a significant role in the project as a leader in one of the key implementation areas, an important supplier of radio and antenna components for wireless embedded systems enriched with artificial intelligence, as well as an animator of activities aimed at including students in cooperation in the project.

– An important aspect of the project will also be the possibility of implementing practical implementations of the location systems developed by us for IoT and technology for secure and reliable wireless communication. They are able to improve both the efficiency of tasks carried out by large companies and institutions, as well as to improve security of their functioning – says the project manager on behalf of GUT prof. Łukasz Kulasfrom the GUT Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, Department of Microwave and Antenna Engineering, as well as the rector's representative at the recently created GUT Digital Technology Center (one of the four new GUT research centers created after the university obtained the status of a research university in October 2019).

– We were able to include Pomerania in the project, as one of the implementation locations and we are currently planning to carry out pilot installations in the area of local ports and hospitals, which we particularly enjoy - adds prof. Kulas.

Modern 5G technologies and care for the environment

The ‘BEYOND5 project: Building the fully European supplY chain on RFSOI, enabling New RF Domains for Sensing, Communication, 5G and beyond’ is a pioneering technological project whose consortium consists of the most important European entities developing 5G systems based on FDSOI integrated circuit technology.

The project, with a budget of over 97 million euro, is attended by 36 partners from EU countries, Turkey, Israel and Switzerland. The new technologies that will be developed in the project will contribute to the use of high-scale integration of integrated circuits, which will ensure the reduction of energy consumption, higher reliability and better price competitiveness, which will enable future mass production of reliable components for 5G in EU countries, while at the same time low negative environmental impact in Europe.

- Within the project, we will implement advanced antenna systems enabling dynamic adaptation of 5G wireless systems to the conditions of the environment in which they work, in order to ensure reliable communication with increased resistance to radio interference - says prof. Krzysztof Nyka, project manager on the GUT side.

Project partners are primarily interested in the possibilities that are available at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics in the field of millimeter waves. In addition to our scientific potential, the creation of the FutureLab laboratory concept by the Dean of the Faculty, which placed us in the first league of institutions in Europe when it comes to the development of 5G technology using communication in frequencies above 20 GHz has clearly influenced the acquisition of this project
