Initiatives and achievements

In 2020, the Daniel Fahrenheit University Association was established, which was created at the request of the rectors of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology and the University of Gdańsk. The most important task of the Association is to make the best use of the resources and possibilities of all three universities, which could create one academic center in the future through joint activities.

A new development strategy for the university for the next ten years of operation was also created. The strategy of Gdańsk University of Technology defines the system of values that guide the university in its activities, the so-called university's mission, i.e. the main goals of the activities undertaken, the vision of the university's development status in the indicated time horizon, as well as the basic methods and tools of action aimed at achieving the assumed goals.

In July 2020, the Senate of Gdańsk Tech decided to establish, from January 1, 2021, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology. It was created on the basis of two faculties previously functioning separately: Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology and Mechanical Engineering. Such integration allowed, among others: exchange of competences, experiences and capabilities of individual research teams of both faculties, use of common equipment, as well as integration of research in the field of the newly introduced (Act 2.0) discipline "mechanical engineering", under which the achievements of the university will be accounted for by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Moreover, Gdańsk University of Technology was included in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, for the first time. Among the 1,000 best universities from around the world, there are eight Polish universities. Gdańsk Tech immediately found itself in the range of 801-900, ahead of two other Polish universities.

According to the data from the report of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Gdańsk Tech was once again ranked second among the technical universities in Poland most frequently chosen by candidates. With over 428 thousand people who started higher education at Polish universities in October 2020, as many as 25 thousand wanted to study at Gdańsk University of Technology. On the list of the most frequently chosen public universities in Poland - according to the total number of applications of candidates for first and second cycle studies – Gdańsk Tech took second place in the country, second only to the Warsaw University of Technology (45,000 applications).

We also enjoyed sports successes. Gdańsk Tech won in 2020 in the general classification of the Polish Academic Championships, ahead of the University of Warsaw and the Silesian University of Technology. The university was also the only one whose athletes took part in all 48 PAC disciplines. It also won the classification of technical universities.
