Nearly 200 top high school students from the Pomeranian region got a glimpse of what it’s like to study at Gdańsk University of Technology during the third edition of “Politechnika Talentów”, the university’s summer school initiative. The two-day event combined hands-on learning with opportunities for integration and student life experiences.

The summer school kicked off on Thursday morning, 18 September, with participants gathering in Fahrenheit Courtyard to take part in coaching and integration workshops led by Milena Chomik and Karolina Laskowska from Gdańsk’s Talent Development Centre.

The official opening ceremony took place in the Gdańsk Tech Main Hall, and was led by Rector Prof. Krzysztof Wilde.

“I want you to feel part of our community over these two days,” said Prof. Wilde. “Explore our campus, take part in the sessions you’ve chosen, remain curious, ask questions, and most importantly – have fun. I hope we’ll meet again on this campus when you return as first-year students at Gdańsk Tech.”

Also speaking during the ceremony was Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Prof. Barbara Wikieł, who presented the “Stypendium Talentów” (Talents Scholarship) – a university competition dedicated to high school students with a strong passion for science and notable achievements, not only in academic contests and Olympiads. Winners of the scholarship are awarded, among other things, automatic admission to a study program of their choice at Gdańsk Tech, a dedicated scientific mentor, a monthly scholarship of PLN 2000 throughout the duration of their studies, accommodation in a student dormitory, an option for an individual study plan. Prof. Wikieł summarized the first two editions of the program and encouraged eligible students to apply in the upcoming round. Further details about the Talents Scholarship and the university's full offer for schools are available at szkoly.pg.edu.pl.

Participants of the event also had the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from scholarship recipients, Karolina Hofman and Piotr Lange, who reflected on their first year at Gdańsk Tech, supported by their mentors, Prof. Justyna Płotka-Wasylka and Prof. Grzegorz Lentka.

Hands-On Learning and Student Life Experience

Throughout both days of the summer school, participants engaged in practical sessions aligned with their selected academic pathways, including lab-based workshops. In small groups led by academic staff, the students explored topics such as: biomaterials, cosmetology, 3D Printing, polymers, sound technologies, artificial intelligence, photocatalysis, bioplastics, architecture or transportation systems.

But Politechnika Talentów wasn’t just about studying—it also offered a unique chance to integrate with like-minded peers and get a taste of student life. On Thursday evening, students attended a social event at the “Kwadratowa” student club, followed by an overnight stay in one of the university dormitories.

On the second day, after another round of academic sessions and lunch, students gathered for a closing meeting with Prof. Barbara Wikieł, who wrapped up this edition of the program. Participants then received their certificates, and those interested could take part in sports activities at the Gdańsk Tech Academic Sports Centre.

The event also included a special program for accompanying teachers, who attended workshops organized by the Center for Modern Education, covering topics such as using generative AI in education or tutoring in the teacher’s work.

Meanwhile, the University Library hosted a guided campus tour offering insights into the institution’s rich academic and cultural heritage.

Throughout the event, participants were supported by a team of student volunteers, who assisted in navigating the campus, finding labs, and answering both practical and experience-related questions about studying at Gdańsk Tech.

We extend our sincere thanks to all academic staff, administrative personnel, students, and volunteers whose work contributed to the success of this year’s edition of Politechnika Talentów.
