Young researchers awarded for their publications

PAN
Four researchers from the Gdańsk University of Technology have become winners of the 11th edition of the Competition for the Gdańsk Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences Award for young scientists for the best professional publication in 2025. The awards and distinctions are presented to researchers from the region whose publications have been recognised for their high academic quality and significant contribution to the development of their respective disciplines.

The main prize in technical sciences was awarded to Beata Zima, PhD, DSc, Eng., Professor at Gdańsk Tech from the Institute of Naval Architecture at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology for the publication 'Guided ultrasonic wave technique for corrosion monitoring and thickness variability analysis', Measurement 245 (2025) 116584. The publication describes the development of a non-destructive method for quantitatively assessing the extent of corrosion degradation by estimating statistical parameters describing the condition of the component.

Honourable mentions in technical sciences were awarded to Katarzyna Drozdowska-Czubek, PhD, Eng., from the Department of Metrology and Electronics Systems at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics for the publication 'Selective light-activation of sensing regions in hybrid Au-graphene-TiO2 chemiresistive gas sensor',  Sensors & Actuators: B. Chemical 437 (2025) 137764, and Paweł Tysiąc, PhD, Eng., from the Department of Geodesy at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering for the publication 'Development of UAV-based LiDAR and multispectral measurement techniques for monitoring sediment intrusion in coastal wetlands', Measurement 253 (2025) 117459.

A distinction in the exact and Earth sciences category was presented to Ewelina Pawelczyk, MSc, Eng., a PhD candidate at the Doctoral School of the Gdańsk University of Technology, in the Department of Process Engineering and Chemical Technology at the Faculty of Chemistry, for the publication 'Ni-Mo2C/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for syngas production in pyrolysis-dry reforming of plastics – the effect of amine nature on catalyst performance', Chemical Engineering Journal 516 (2025) 164181.

The aim of the competition organised by the Gdańsk Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences is to promote the outstanding scientific achievements of the younger generation of researchers and to support the development of science in the region. The submitted works are assessed by a panel comprising recognised figures from the academic and scientific communities, representing five fields of science: humanities and social sciences; biological and agricultural sciences; exact and Earth sciences; technical sciences; and medicine.

The awards ceremony will take place on 10 June at the seat of the Polish Academy of Sciences Gdańsk Branch.
