The radio interface developed by GUT scientists will be an innovative product on the Internet of Things market
Over the next three years, a team of scientists from the Department of Radiocommunication Systems and Networks from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, headed by PhD, Eng. Krzysztof K. Cwalina, will carry out research work aimed at developing a configurable, hardware and software radio interface that will be used in intelligent devices of the Internet of Things, among others in the energy, gas and water supply sectors.
The project 'Software-defined, universal radio interface for intelligent devices of the Internet of Things' is implemented in a consortium led by DGT Ltd. The total project budget is over PLN 10 million, and the funding obtained through the National Research and Development Center competition under the Intelligent Development Operational Program exceeds PLN 8 million.
The radio interface, called DUCH IoT (GHOST Internet of Things), will be used to expand the existing ones or implement new Internet of Things devices. The Internet of Things is one of the most dynamically developed areas of technology at the moment and it concerns devices that collect and process data and implement radio communication. Such devices include cameras for remote monitoring, motion sensors, weather stations, electricity, gas or water meters, industrial vehicles or machines. The number of intelligent devices that are supposed to implement radio communication is constantly increasing. The solution proposed by scientists from Gdańsk University of Technology will enable the implementation of radio communication between such devices in accordance with international standards, using the LTE fixed network infrastructure, next generation NGN (Next Generation Network), in particular 5G networks.
– Our radio interface is also to enable the transmission of information within the national critical infrastructure, for example advanced telemetry of energy and water infrastructure, advanced alarm systems and remote supervision - explains PhD, Eng. Krzysztof Cwalina.
The project has been divided into three stages. The first and second stages are industrial research and development work carried out jointly by scientists from FETI and employees of DGT, while the third stage is pre-implementation work, which will be carried out only by the consortium leader - DGT.
– Such an interface is not yet available on the Polish market, and according to our information even on the EU market - adds PhD, Eng. Krzysztof K. Cwalina - Our product, made as a software and hardware framework, will be installed in devices that will be designed to work, among others in difficult environments in terms of radio wave propagation, e.g. basements, underground parking lots. Thanks to the developed, proprietary algorithms for adaptive radio signal reception, it will be possible for the radio link between the IoT device and the base station of the cellular network operator to work effectively, which will positively influence the energy efficiency of this device
