Gdańsk University of Technology has created a new, attractive and green space for residents of Gdańsk. A public park with an area of approximately 7.5 thousand square meters was created in Wrzeszcz, on the slope of Góra Szubieniczna (Gallows Hill), right behind the Gdańsk Tech building equipped with the "Kraken" supercomputer.

At the end of April this year Gdańsk University of Technology has launched the most modern IT complex in Poland - the Gdańsk Tech STOS Competence Center. The "Kraken" supercomputer was placed in the basement of the facility. Its name was chosen by Tricity residents in an online vote. The culmination of the project was the development of the area around the complex.

The new park was officially opened on Thursday, 19 October, during a press conference with the participation of the university authorities: Gdańsk Tech Rector, Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, vice-rector of GUT prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, university chancellor Mariusz Miler - as well as the city authorities, represented by the vice-president of Gdańsk, Monika Chabior. The meeting was also attended by: Krzysztof Koprowski and Ewa Woźna, chairman and deputy chairperson of the Wrzeszcz Górny District Management Board, and Monika Mazurowska, chairwoman of the Aniołki District Management Board.

– While implementing the construction of CK STOS PG, we also decided to create a space that will allow for relaxation and integration of our academic community and the residents of Wrzeszcz and Aniołki, i.e. the closest neighbors of Gdańsk Tech – said prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Gdańsk Tech rector. – Of course, we invite all residents and guests of Gdańsk to use the park and we are glad that we can contribute to the green transformation of our city – he added.

– Counteracting the effects of climate change is one of the most important challenges in the modern world. In Gdańsk, we are aware of this and we are glad that the Gdańsk authorities think the same, said Monika Chabior, vice-president of Gdańsk. – It is extremely important that we take care of green spaces in the city and create new ones. Just like the park we are in and which is a great example of this. I am convinced that it will become a permanent part of the landscape of Wrzeszcz and will be eagerly visited every day.

New, green space in Wrzeszcz

The creation of the park is part of the "Gdańsk Tech Climate Plan" adopted by the university, which concerns both the scientific and research sphere (scientific research on solutions that will help counteract climate change) as well as the quality of education (including the creation of teaching programs related to energy transformation and adaptation to climate change) and the university infrastructure.

– We actively participate in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and we also implement the strategy set out in the "Gdańsk Tech Climate Plan" - said prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, Gdańsk Tech vice-rector for organization and development. – Creating green spaces on the campus, such as this park, is one of the proofs of our activity in this area. We want our campus to be more and more green and friendly, he added.

– The park's design assumed the use of pro-ecological and energy-saving solutions – adds Mariusz Miler, Chancellor of Gdańsk Tech. – In addition, in line with the educational objectives of the campus, an outdoor amphitheater-type classroom, an open gym, park paths and gravel squares surrounded by flower meadows were created in the park. We also took care of the diversity of species by planting over 1,500 plants. We have created a new, attractive space and a walking path connecting the University campus with the Gallows Hill, where the largest water reservoir in Gdańsk, Stary Sobieski, with a viewing point, is located, as well as the Nostalgic Park, established in 2018 on the preserved part of the former urn cemetery.

In the park, designed by architect Zbigniew Reszka (Arch Deco architectural studio), you can meet species such as: rugose rose, creeping yew, grapevine, miscanthus, perennials, meadowsweet, branched echinoderm, common loosestrife, and rudbeckia brilliant. 18 small-leaved linden trees, 300 purple willow "Nana" bushes were also planted, and in the central part of the park there is a common beech "Pendula" (the so-called weeping beech) and a rain garden.

Extension of the historical axis of the Gdańsk Tech campus

The park, the construction of which cost just over PLN 3.5 million from the university's own funds, will be available 24 hours a day. Energy-saving park lamps were used to illuminate it at night. Their shape and color complement the aesthetic and spatial values of the new space.

The new green space dedicated to residents is an integral part of the Gdańsk Tech STOS CC complex, whose shape and division into two parts gave a new character to Traugutta Street and at the same time continues the assumptions of the spatial development plan of the Gdańsk Tech campus. The building and the park constitute a system that takes into account the extension of the compositional axis of the Gdańsk Tech Main Building, thanks to which it now constitutes a harmonious whole.
