Prof. Krzysztof Wilde elected rector of Gdańsk University of Technology for the 2024–2028 term

Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, PhD, DSc, Eng., corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, was elected rector of Gdańsk University of Technology for the 2024-2028 term. The official election results were announced by the University Electoral Commission, and the new term of office of the current Gdańsk Tech rector will begin on 1 September 2024.

In the election campaign, prof. Krzysztof Wilde referred to his election declarations from four years ago and demonstrated their implementation in his election program. In the next term of office, he intends to focus his activities on building Gdańsk University of Technology as an even more friendly university for employees, PhD students, students, graduates and people from the socio-economic environment, and at the same time a more ambitious and competitive entity.

– I am honored and at the same time extremely grateful for the trust that the academic community of Gdańsk University of Technology has once again placed in me – said rector Prof. Krzysztof Wilde just after the election results were announced. – My ambition is for our Alma Mater to develop at an even greater pace than before in the coming years. I believe that even the most ambitious goals will be achievable if we derive joy and satisfaction from working for the University of Technology. We can only achieve this together, by respecting and listening to each other.

Electoral procedure at the university

The University Electoral College, consisting of 117 electors selected from among the Gdańsk Tech academic community in previous votes (in 10 electoral districts), was entitled to participate in the secret ballot. On 12 March, 114 of them took part in the vote. The current rector received 108 votes of support, prof. Anna Dołęga received 4 votes, while two electors abstained from voting.

Two candidates took part in the elections: prof. Anna Dołęga (Faculty of Chemistry) and prof. Krzysztof Wilde (Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, current rector of Gdańsk Tech). Last Tuesday, 5 March this year, the candidates took part in a debate in which they answered questions from representatives of the Gdańsk Tech Student Government, which were exclusively related to student affairs. Then, on 6 March, the candidates presented their electoral programs at an open information meeting of the UEC, attended by electors and all interested university employees and students.

The Electoral College of Gdańsk University of Technology consists of Gdańsk Tech Senators and representatives of all groups of the academic community, elected on the basis of the applicable electoral law of the university 

Achievements of the rector of Gdańsk University of Technology

Prof. Krzysztof Wilde has been in office of the rector of Gdańsk University of Technology since 2019. Before becoming rector, he was dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdańsk Tech three times. He gained international scientific and organizational experience at foreign universities, among others at the University of Tokyo in Japan, where he obtained his PhD and started working, eventually obtaining the position of associate professor at the university. He specializes in bridge structures, building mechanics and diagnostics of building structures. He is the author or co-author of over 200 publications and four patents. In 2016, he became a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has approximately 1,900 citations (excluding self-citations) in the Web of Science Core Collection database and the Hirsch index 23

In 2023, prof. Wilde was elected co-chair of the Board of Directors of the European University ENHANCE - an international consortium bringing together leading technical universities, such as the University of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft).

He co-founded the Fahrenheit Union of Universities (FarU) in 2019, which includes the Medical University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology and the University of Gdańsk.

He is the chairman of the investment team at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in the field of infrastructure investments in Polish science, as well as the chairman of the Council of Rectors of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. He is also the chairman of the council of the professional self-government of construction engineers (Pomeranian District Chamber of Construction Engineers), as well as the president of AZS Gdańsk (AZS Organizacja Środowiskowa Gdańsk - AZS Environmental Organization Gdańsk).
