Technology to revolutionize the work of Polish courts is developed at Gdańsk Tech

Access to the knowledge base and legal opinions during trials, real-time recording of witnesses’ statements and generation of minutes, a virtual assistant to support the judge are just some of the features of the “LEX-AIS” system that is under development by scientists from Gdańsk University of Technology and experts from LEX SECURE AI for the work of Polish courts to be more efficient.

In October, Gdańsk University of Technology, together with LEX SECURE AI, a limited liability company from the NAVIMOR Group, formed a consortium to jointly implement a project called ‘”LEX-AIS” System for Common Courts’. This is a revolution in the use of artificial intelligence in the judicial system, which will more efficiently support the work of courts and realistically help judges and court stenographers in their work.

The collaboration will include R&D and implementation work. The project will be implemented in four phases:

Phase 1 includes the development of an audio recording system for courtrooms, the design of a technical security system and legal solutions allowing for the recording and transmission of trials, as well as the development and launch of a technological demonstrator at Gdańsk Tech premises.

Phase 2 will include a pilot study of the functionality of an acoustic intensity sensor within the “LEX-AIS” system in four courtrooms. Audio and text materials will be obtained during the pilot and used to train selected language and speech-to-text models.

In Phase 3, the “LEX-AIS” system will be implemented in 100 courtrooms.

The final stage is the nationwide implementation of the system.

On the part of Gdańsk University of Technology, the cooperation contract was signed by Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech, Prof. Jacek Stefański, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, as well as Prof. Andrzej Czyżewski, Head of the Department of Multimedia Systems of the same faculty. On the part of the consortium, the contract was concluded by Kajetan Komar-Komorowski, CEO of LEX SECURE AI LLC and Romuald Kinda, Chairperson of the NAVIMOR International Capital Group.

‘We are convinced that our cooperation will bring significant benefits to the judicial system in Poland,’ said Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech, during the contract signing. This is an innovative project in recording trials that will make the work of Polish courts more efficient.’

Significant acceleration of work at courts

‘The implementation of our original system will give judges access to a massive knowledge base, including about 500,000 rulings issued in Polish courts. It will support them in key parts of their trials, as they will be able to get instant answers to their questions and legal opinions issued in other similar cases,’ explains Prof. Andrzej Czyżewski. ‘For the past 8 years, the system has been trained by 320 lawyers working with our partner – LEX SECURE AI, and it has full knowledge of the Polish legal system, but also the ability to analyze and interpret the law. Its implementation can speed up the work of courts by 50 percent!’

Sensor that shall distinguish every voice

This is not the end of the “LEX-AIS” abilities. Thanks to acoustic sensors designed at the Department of Multimedia Systems, it will be possible to automatically create written minutes of trials in real time. This is because the sensor registers all statements, and the system transforms them into text with appropriately assigned process roles of the speakers. This speeds up and makes the work of judges more efficient, as they immediately have access to ready-made protocols.

Gdańsk University of Technology has been working on AI solutions with its partners for several years now. With the current contract, which was concluded on October 22, this cooperation is tightened and funding can be obtained from the Polish Ministry of Digitalization, the Polish Ministry of Justice and other sources, including the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (Polish: PARP) or the National Centre for Research and Development (Polish: NCBiR) programs. The first meeting and presentation of the project at the Ministry of Justice was held on November 5, and the solutions presented by Prof. Czyżewski were met with great interest.

The consortium was contracted for a fixed term, until the system’s commercialization is completed.
