Gdańsk University of Technology and Hanwha Ocean have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) encompassing research collaboration in the field of safety and operational efficiency of submarines in ice-covered waters. The document was signed during this year’s International Defence Industry Exhibition in Kielce.

Strengthening our collaboration with Hanwha Ocean opens up new perspectives in Arctic research and maritime technologies. Our expertise in marine engineering will allow us to make a significant contribution to this international research initiative - stated Professor Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk University of Technology.

According to the Memorandum, Gdańsk University of Technology will serve as an advisory partner in a project led by Hanwha Ocean in cooperation with the Finnish company Aker Arctic Technology Oy. The university’s responsibilities will include, among others:

  • verification of model testing methodologies,
  • evaluation of simulation parameters for ice conditions with reference to the Baltic Sea,
  • support in the analysis of test results,
  • possibility of expanding the collaboration to subsequent stages of the project.

- Cooperation with Gdańsk University of Technology will enable us to strengthen the regional dimension of the research and ensure the highest quality of scientific analysis within the project concerning submarine operations in extreme conditions - emphasized Charlie SC Eoh, President and COO of the Naval Ship Business at Hanwha Ocean.

The agreement represents a further step in the development of Gdańsk University of Technology’s international research collaborations in the area of innovative maritime technologies, with particular emphasis on the safety and efficiency of operations in challenging environmental conditions.
