“I declare the academic year to be open”. Inaugural session of the Gdańsk Tech Senate

– We have finished the academic year which could be described with one word: "demanding". We faced challenges that we would not have been able to imagine a few years ago. All the time, however, we undertook actions that were sufficiently quick and appropriate to the situation, which translated into the fact that today we can agree – this year was a big step forward for Gdańsk University of Technology – said the rector, prof. Krzysztof Wilde during the ceremonial session of the Senate of Gdańsk University of Technology, inaugurating the academic year 2022/2023.

The ceremonial session of the Senate began with the reading of letters containing best wishes for the new academic year. The letter of the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, was read by his advisor, Piotr Karczewski, and the letter from Mateusz Morawiecki, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland – by Dariusz Drelich, the Pomeranian Voivode. In turn, the words addressed to the academic community by the minister of education were read by prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of Gdańsk Tech.

Art is my point of reference

Prof. Jan Buczkowski
Artist painter, prof. Jan Buczkowski, head of the Department of Visual Arts, Plenipotentiary of the Gdańsk Tech rector for artistic affairs, was awarded the title of "Personality of the Year 2022", which he received "in respect of exceptional merits for the University aimed at creating the image of Gdańsk University of Technology as a modern technical university combining the strength of tradition with modernity, in particular for building a uniform, recognizable and coherent system of external and internal visual identification of Gdańsk University of Technology, for activities aimed at creating a museum of art and technology on the campus, enabling the university's academic community constant contact with contemporary art, and for guests being a sign of openness and modernity of the university "
Barbara Kuklińska: What is it like for an artist to work among engineers and scientists in the field of exact sciences?

Jan Buczkowski: I started working at the University of Technology a year after graduating from art studies, and right after completing a year of military service. When I entered the Main Building for the first time in the fall of 1987, I was shocked. Accustomed to the not too large and austere interiors of my previous university, I felt as if I had entered a different world.
