The international Galileo Award for an architect from GUT

Dr. Eng. Arch. Karolina Zielińska-Dąbkowska, assistant professor at the Department of Urban Architecture and Waterscapes, Faculty of Architecture GUT, was awarded the international Galileo Award 2020, by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) which is based in the USA.

The Galileo Award was established by the IDA Europe in 2003 and has traditionally been presented at the European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky. Only one award is awarded each year "in recognition of outstanding achievements in research or academic work on light pollution over a multiple-year period".

Lost equipment in hospitals will no longer be a problem

Specialized equipment for examinations at patients' beds, portable x-ray or ECG devices, or even wheelchairs - searching round the hospital for the appropriate medical equipment often wastes a lot of staff’s time that could be spent on helping patients. However, thanks to the technology of scientists from the GUT Department of Microwave and Antenna Engineering, it will be possible to overcome this problem.

Gdańsk University of Technology signed an agreement with Copernicus Ltd. in Gdańsk on handing over an innovative indoor location system to the medics. The system is the result of many years of research and development work of scientists from the GUT Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, who developed algorithms and prepared devices containing the so-called reconfigurable antennas - enabling the location of individual objects with very high accuracy.

Mariusz Machajewski is the new president of the Polytechnic company Excento, supporting GUT scientists in commercializing their research projects, as well as connecting the world of science with the socio-economic environment. In an interview, President Machajewski talks, among others about the company's vision of development, its competences and previous professional achievements, as well as about the differences between the world of science and business - and ideas on how to overcome them.

Maciej Dzwonnik, GUT spokesman: You worked for the Lotos Group for over 20 years, for over 10 years of which you held the position of vice president of the management board. What were your duties?

GUT in the second place among Polish universities in the field of ‘engineering’

In the latest edition of THE University Subject Rankings 2021, Gdańsk University of Technology was ranked second among Polish universities in the field of ‘engineering’.

The university has been classified in three areas: engineering, computer science and physical sciences. In the field of engineering GUT once again took second place among Polish universities, while in the field of physical sciences it recorded an increase with respect to the previous rankings by taking third place among Polish universities (last year it was the fifth position).

GUT is the coordinator monitoring the epidemic situation at universities in the Pomeranian Voivodeship

Covid
The Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (KRASP), together with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education decided to appoint 16 provincial (regional) coordinators whose task will be to monitor the epidemic situation at universities in individual regions. Gdańsk University of Technology will be the coordinating university in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. The person appointed by the ministry as coordinator at GUT is prof. Krzysztof Wilde, corresponding member of the PAS, rector of Gdańsk University of Technology.

Coordinators, in cooperation with the voivode and the authorities of other universities, will collect and update data on the number of confirmed infections, quarantine referrals and other alarming events related to the epidemic occurring at universities (including dormitories) in a given region.

Filip Ciszkiewicz (The Arka Municipal Sailing Club in Gdynia)  has become the vice-champion of Senior Europe in the Olympic Laser Radial class. Filip is a graduate of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Gdansk University of Technology.

K&TTC director is a member the ministry's advisory team

Damian Kuźniewski
In October, Damian Kuźniewski, director of the Center for Knowledge and Technology Transfer at Gdańsk University of Technology, was appointed to the Advisory Team for the development of the assumptions for the evaluation of knowledge and technology transfer at the Ministry of Education and Science.

Changes taking place in higher education, thanks to e.g. introducing the Constitution for Science, generate the need for new ways of assessing their effectiveness. In addition to evaluating the quality of education, a method of assessing knowledge and technology transfer is needed as well. A new advisory team, composed of representatives of several Polish universities, both experts - practitioners and scientists, is to deal with the development of new assessment methods. The 10-person team is just starting its activity.
