The Northern Technical University delegation visiting Gdańsk Tech
On February 5th, Gdańsk Tech University hosted a delegation from the Northern Technical University (Mosul, Iraq). The purpose of the meeting was to establish cooperation in various areas such as the exchange of students and academic staff, as well as research cooperation.

Northern Technical University (NTU) was established in 2014 and is one of four public technical universities in Iraq. There are over 40,400 students enrolled at NTU, including 40,000 first-cycle students, 400 second-cycle students, and over 250 PhD students. The University offers studies in 20 fields conducted across 14 colleges and institutes distributed across the northern region of Iraq.

ELECTRUST is a project devoted to the analysis of threats and benefits offered by Internet voting systems, which was carried out at Gdańsk University of Technology by prof. David Duenas-Cid. It was among fifteen projects in the area of research on challenges to democracy (under the Horizon program) presented by the European Commission on CORDIS.

In view of the upcoming European Parliament elections, and taking into account "reduced trust in governments, increased political polarization and the development of external threats to democracy", the European Commission has selected 15 projects funded under the Horizon program that are "investigating challenges to democracy and testing innovative solutions that support higher citizen engagement in democratic processes”.

New functional bone cements to substitute defects and accelerate regeneration

Dr Wekwejt i ekipa
Injectable, more effective and actively supporting bone tissue regeneration cements have been developed by a research team at Gdańsk University of Technology. Already submitted for patent protection, the inventions are to be widely applied in orthopedics and trauma surgery. Now researchers are working on the obtained cements to enhance their innovativeness.

Bone cements for clinical applications, i.e. self-hardening bone substitutes, are usually biomaterials consisting of powder and liquid. When mixed, they form a paste which when applied to the body hardens in a chemical reaction. Recently, there are various forms of bone regeneration materials, including polymer cements (mainly composed of polymethyl methacrylate) and ceramic cements (usually composed of calcium phosphates).
