Cellulose-based meats? The future of vegan cured meat dependent on bacteria

Agata Sommer, PhD, from the Faculty of Chemistry, is working on a solution for production of vegan cured meat based on bacterial cellulose.

Bacterial cellulose is a biopolymer synthesized by non-pathogenic bacteria, naturally present in the environment. Its chemical composition is the same as that of plant cellulose. The fibers of bacterial cellulose, however, are a thousand times thinner than fibers in plant cellulose.

Results of the QS World University Rankings 2024

QS ranking
In the 20th jubilee ranking edition of the best universities from around the world, Gdańsk University of Technology was placed in range 851-900, achieving the 6th result among 22 Polish universities classified in the ranking.

This year's QS World University Rankings, presenting the best universities from around the world, covered 104 countries and analyzed the data of 2963 universities. In the ranking universities were valuated and only 1,499 the best universities were finally classified according to the standards (including 83 new universities).

ENHANCE invites - workshop on Learning environments for Alpha generation (July 4)

Warsaw University of Technology invites students, PhD students and staff to an online "ENHANCE workshops on learning environments for alpha generation" (Tuesday, July 4). Registration is required. 

In 2022, Gdańsk University of Technology joined the ENHANCE Alliance - an association of 10 European technical universities. Thanks to the presence at ENHANCE, students and employees of Gdańsk Tech have the opportunity to participate in winter and summer schools, seminars and other interesting events on various topics. The next such event for students will be organized on Tuesday, 4 June. This time Warsaw University of Technology - ENHANCE member, invites to workshops on learning environments for Alpha generation. 

Bike service as part of "By bike to the university" competition

Thanks to a convenient network of bicycle routes, commuting to work or lectures at the Gdańsk Tech can be easily done by bike.

However for comfort and safety reasons,  it is worth to regularly check its technical condition. Do-it-yourself activities such as pumping the wheels or chain lubricating can increase cycling comfort. Depending on will and skills, regular bicycle service such as brakes and derailleurs inspection can be done on your own or by a bicycle repair shop.

Ingenious Inventors Wanted - The James Dyson Award 2023

James Dyson Award
Only until July 19, you can submit your project for The James Dyson Award 2023.

The competition is organized by the James Dyson Foundation, founded in 2002, which aims to support young engineers and encourage them to be passionate about construction. The organizers of this year's edition of the competition direct attention to ecology and look also for projects aimed at solving problems related to sustainable development or designed, obtained or made in a sustainable way.

The European Commission representatives HRS4R assessment visit in Gdańsk Tech

On 16th of June, there took place the European Commission (EC) representatives visit assessing the implementation of HRS4R actions in the university as well as renewal of HR Excellence in Research logo use right. The assessors, chaired by Prof. Adriana Burlea-Schiopoiu, talked to the university authorities, four groups of researchers including early-stage career researchers and administrative staff.

Let's talk about... let's talk with...
The HR Center invites employees and PhD students of Gdańsk Tech to the meeting "Let's talk about Gdańsk Tech HR4R Strategy", which will take place on June 29th from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm in the conference room of Hydromechanika building.

The event will take place as part of the series of meetings "Let's talk about ..., let's talk with ...", which is one of the activities in the HR4R Strategy for 2022-2025 and aims at topics important to the entire community of Gdańsk Tech.

The meeting will be held in Polish.

Action plans for Young Researchers at faculties and Doctoral Schools

In the period July - September 2022, a survey was conducted among young researchers examining barriers to their development at the Gdańsk Tech.

Researchers identified the problems they face in various areas of functioning at Gdańsk Tech (42% of respondents answered the survey).

The survey report is available after logging in to Strefa Pracownika (Employee Zone).

Gdańsk Tech architect in Science journal on nocturnal light pollution

Karolina Zielińska-Dąbrowska, PhD, Eng. Arch. Faculty of Architecture, is the first author of the article about the effects of nocturnal light pollution on humans, published in the latest issue of the American Science journal. This is the first publication of its kind affiliated with Gdańsk University of Technology  to be included in this prestigious journal.

This special issue of Science includes a section containing five articles focused on the problem of light pollution (cover story).
