Design-for-safety "- safe sea transport

Sea transport
"Design-for-safety - development of a rational method of designing a ship in order to increase the safety of navigation, with particular emphasis on stability and maneuverability" - is a new project on which scientists from the Institute of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology at Gdańsk University of Technology will work. For the implementation of the project managed by Jakub Montewka, PhD, DSc, Eng. scientists received PLN 498,800 as part of the Aurum program.

Sea transport is particularly vulnerable due to the complex, often unpredictable environment in which it operates. Threats may arise from both deliberate and accidental actions (hydrometeorological, mechanical conditions, etc.). Providing navigational safety, including collision avoidance, is one of the main and most important issues related to the issue of fleet development.

A waste collection vessel will be built. A contract has been signed

prof. Sławomir Milewski, PhD, DSc, Eng., Vice-Rector for Science and Adam Ślipy
An autonomous ship will be constructed that will collect waste from water and other ships, and will be powered by electricity. On 5 April, prof. Sławomir Milewski, Vice-Rector for Science and Adam Ślipy, President of Seatech Engineering, signed a consortium agreement for the implementation of the project.

The project "Zero-emission Ship for Collection of Waste in Ports and Coastal Areas" (acronym: ZeroWastePorts) will be implemented by a Polish-Taiwanese consortium. It consists of - on the Polish side - the Seatech Engineering design office as leader and Gdańsk University of Technology, and on the Taiwanese side, the National Taiwan University and the Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center.

Bioactive glass – in search of synthetic alternatives

Natalia Wójcik in the laboratory
Natalia Wójcik, PhD, from the  Institute of Nanotechnology and Materials Engineering, is seeking alternative materials, more precisely modified bioactive vitreous materials for the production of composites used in bone implants. This research can contribute to development of more advanced implants in the future, which will regenerate bone defects and will not interfere with the biochemical balance of the body.

The materials currently used for bone implants production are composed of bioactive glass.  It is commonly used silicate-based glass, which is added even to some toothpastes. Thanks to them, implants have properties that force the bone to regenerate exactly in the place where they are located. Silicon oxide constitutes 50% of the composition of this glass, the rest being admixtures of phosphorus, calcium and sodium oxide.
