SMR technology as an alternative to coal. Cooperation between Gdańsk Tech and EC Będzin S.A.

two men
Gdańsk University of Technology has concluded a cooperation agreement with EC Będzin S.A. The main subject of the agreement is the promotion of nuclear technologies in the context of economic and technological development, joint technological research and the provision of consulting services.

The joint-stock company EC Będzin is one of the oldest energy companies in Poland, with a 113-year history. Since 1998, it has been listed on the stock exchange, as the first company in the power industry. Its main areas of activity are the generation of heat and electricity and trade in energy raw materials.

Gdańsk University of Technology together with EC Będzin S.A. will develop and promote primarily SMR technologies (Small Modular Reactors).

Katarzyna Drozdowska - graduate of the Doctoral School at Gdańsk University of Technology, scientifically affiliated with the Faculty of Electronics, Telecomunications and Informatics, began her PhD training in the a.y. 2020/2021 under the supervision of prof. dr hab. inż. Janusz Smulko affiliated with Department of Metrology and Optoelectronics.

Software Management Plan

The software has become a fundamental element of modern scientific research. Scientists often create their own solutions for data analysis and visualisation, but their approach to documentation, versioning, and code sharing can be unsystematic. Software Management Plans (SMPs) emerged as a response to the need to organise this process.

Gas detection system using two-dimensional materials

Katarzyna Drozdowska
Effective detection of low gas concentrations can be used in environmental monitoring, assessment of food product freshness, detection of explosives or medical diagnostics. For effective detection, extremely sensitive sensors are needed. Katarzyna Drozdowska, a graduate of the Doctoral School, studies low-dimensional materials that are suitable for their construction.

Low-dimensional materials and structures have extremely attractive properties for the production of sensors and efficient detection of trace amounts of analytical substances. A large surface-to-volume ratio and increased surface activity of two-dimensional structures offer enhanced detection at the molecular level.
