Prof. Figurski is an expert of the Parliamentary Group on Outer Space

Prof. Mariusz Figurski from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at GUT was appointed a scientific expert in the Parliamentary Group on Outer Space in this term of the Sejm. The group consists of scientists and business representatives who work together to develop the Polish satellite technology sector and expand cooperation on the international arena.

The first Parliamentary meeting of the Outer Space Group in the new term of the Sejm took place on 24 September and was combined with the group's participation in the European Interparliamentary Space Conference.

Academic teacher, scientist and inventor associated with Gdańsk University of Technology for nearly 40 years. Head of the Department of Multimedia Systems at the ETI Faculty at GUT, where he educates successive generations of scientists and supports the development of Polish science. Winner of numerous awards and distinctions, the latest of which is the title of ‘Personality of the Year 2020’ at Gdańsk University of Technology. - It is an appreciation not only of my own work, but of the entire department and its employees - emphasizes prof. Andrzej Czyżewski.

Prof. Edmund Wittbrodt holds an honorary honoris causa doctorate from the University of Gdańsk

The University of Gdańsk honored prof. Edmund Wittbrodt, rector of Gdańsk University of Technology in 1990-1996 and the minister of national education in 2000-2001 with an honorary honoris causa doctorate. The ceremony took place on Monday, 5 October at the Artus Court in Gdańsk.

The honorary honoris causa doctorate, as part of the 50th anniversary of the University of Gdańsk, was awarded to the first democratically elected rectors of Gdańsk universities after the 1989 political changes in Poland: prof. Edmund Wittbrodt, rector of GUT in 1990-1996, prof. Stefan Angielski, rector of the Medical Academy in 1990-1993 and prof. Zbigniew Grzonka, rector of the University of Gdańsk in 1990-1996.

Yellow zone until 16th October only

Gdańsk is in the so-called yellow zone with additional restrictions related to counteracting the spread of the coronavirus until 16th October. The university authorities appeal to the GUT academic community to pay special attention to the applicable sanitary guidelines and the rules of the university functioning during the pandemic. New information about conducting rules today in the afternoon. 

Introduction of the so-called yellow zone throughout the country entails a number of restrictions that must be followed in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The guidelines mainly apply to areas such as public space, transport, gastronomy, trade and services, organization of large events, etc. - there are no additional guidelines imposed on universities.

New year, new challenges. ‘Gdańsk is the leading academic center in Poland’

- Today we are inaugurating the new academic year. I am very pleased to welcome you in good health, ready to work and learn, despite the unusual circumstances in which we meet - said Professor Krzysztof Wilde, GUT rector, opening the ceremonial Open Session of the Senate.

Due to the epidemic situation the central ceremony inaugurating the new academic year was held this year in a hybrid manner. The list of direct participants of the Open Session of the Senate was limited, while all those interested could take part in the ceremony thanks to the online broadcast.

PhD Barbara Wikieł, GUT professor, the director of the Mathematics Teaching and Distance Learning Centre at Gdańsk University of Technology and PhD Magdalena Popowska from the Faculty of Management and Economics were invited to participate in the work of the team of experts that deals with the development of the Regional Strategic Program of the Pomeranian Voivodeship in the field of education and social capital.

PhD Wikieł has been cooperating with the educational and local government community of Pomerania in the field of education for many years. She has also been cooperating with the self-government of the Pomeranian Voivodeship for several years. She was a member of the Pomeranian Consulting Council for Supporting Gifted Students, since 2016 she has been a member of the Educational Cohesion Team at the Pomeranian Educational Council. In 2009-2014, she also participated in the works of the Gdańsk Educational Council.

A modern metrology laboratory is being built at GUT

Signing a cooperation agreement between GUT and Mitutoyo Polska
One of the most modern metrology laboratories in northern Poland will be established in the Department of Machine Technology and Production Automation at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Gdańsk University of Technology. This is the result of a cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mitutoyo Polska, which begins joint activities to use advanced measuring equipment and software as part of broadly understood didactics and to conduct scientific and research works. On 24 September, a contract was officially signed, thanks to which the university will receive the latest generation equipment, worth over PLN 1.2 million.

Optical 2D and 3D measuring systems or coordinate measuring machines are just some of the equipment that will be delivered to the new laboratory. The new devices will be used primarily by scientists and students.
